So my company was acquired in February, since then there have been massive layoffs of over 500 people. 1 month ago my direct supervisor/boss quit taking a position at another company. Since that time I have been in a state of limbo because the company doesn't really have a place for me without my boss but they haven't laid me off yet.

My regional manager has come to me this week and asked me to submit my resignation letter.

Why would he ask for this and not lay me off?

Or is this the process for getting laid off.

What are the implications of submitting a resignation letter if I need to file for unemployment?
