Hey PF, I tried applying for term life insurance as my wife and I are having a baby and just wanted some added protection. I am 27 and very healthy. I was quoted over the phone, $20 for a 20 year, $500k policy. Great I said, let's move forward.
In the interview process they asked have I ever, in my life, used a tobacco product. Why yes, I have, a cigar once, at my best friends wedding almost a year ago. I then say tops I have 3 a year for these types of occasions. I then have a blood test taken and such, that physician asks, have I ever in my life touched anything tobacco related. Yes, a cigar, almost a year ago.
I get my documents to sign today and they now want $93/mo and have me in a general smokers category.
I don't smoke. I was trying to be as clear and honest as possible not believing they'd be so black and white about this. I am honestly furious, and mad I mentioned something so mundane. Is there anything I can do about it? Is this on my record now where I am labeled a smoker if I go to a different agency? I am honestly worried I can't add this level of protection for my family now as I am certainly not paying that for life insurance as a healthy 27 year old.
TL;DR: Labeled by life insurance as a smoker for mentioning I smoked a cigar at a wedding. Price was then 5x the quote. What do I do now?
