I want to stay in my company, but I also want more money, and I'm more than certain that I already deserve it. I want to stsy because I like the job and it's the best option in my non-metro area, by far.
Let's say I manage to get a good offer from another company, what's the best way to use that offer to negotiate a pay raise while staying on good terms with my employers, without making them feel blackmailed?
I basically want to avoid getting a raise and triggering in them the impulse to look for my replacement, if you know what I mean...
One thing going for me at the moment is that I'm currently (at least until 2018) hard to replace (knowledge, experience, key participation in key projects, etc), and I'd like to capitalize on that while I have the upper hand.
The reason I insist on the competing offer is that my bosses are the kind of people who already tried to BS their way into not giving more money, so they'll only cede if there's a complicated flight risk.
