My newborn fell and cut his tongue. He was bleeding heavily and went to the ER. The hospital kept him overnight for observation due to uncontrolled bleeding hoping it would heal on its own, and the next morning decided to put him in surgery for stitches. A few hours after surgery, he was discharged.

I get a call this morning from Blue Cross that they have determined the overnight stay was unnecessary and are denying that part of the stay. They are still requesting more information from the hospital and said they may revise their decision.

My questions for those who are familiar with insurance companies: How can an insurance company deny a claim for an emergency stay? Do they expect patients to go against medical advise and try to rush themselves out of the hospital? What are the odds I'll wind up footing the bill for the stay?
