I've taken on a few woodworking projects recently, nothing fancy, and this certainly might not be practical advice for those hugely into woodworking. But living in the city and having no other real wood supply services in the area other than hardware stores, buying a huge sheet of wood is kind of expensive and daunting for what I want to use it for.
That being said, I recently thought to check out the cut-offs area at my local hardware store and I've been able to get perfectly good wood at the right sizes I needed them to be for absolutely free. If the wood is too large however, I've been given a great discount (which is fair considering how much they've given me).
I just go up to a worker and be completely honest about how I'm working on a small project and only really need a small amount of wood, and would there be any I'd be able to take from their cut-offs area. They're always happy to get rid of the extra wood (which is often too small to have anyone buy), and is much cheaper than getting a large sheet to take large cuts from (seeing as there's a big discount in the cut-offs too large to give away for free).
