I have a small studio apt. Space is a premium, so I've been using air mattresses with a sleeping bag on top so that during the day I can throw the bag in the closet and flip the mattress up on its side to open up the room. The problem is that air mattresses suck: they seem to last me like 6-18 months before they crack at a seam and I've never found any repair goop that's both strong and flexible enough to survive more than a couple hours. Sure air mattresses are only like $20-30 each, but repeatedly buying new ones seems stupid.
I don't need much out of a bed. I'd like to replace the air mattress with some kind of simple foam pad on a simple frame that keeps it a few inches off the floor (humidity/mold is an issue) that I can collapse or fold up or something.
However, everywhere I look I'm only seeing fancy stuff that's like $75,$100,$200+ for some funky Japanese thing hand woven out of gnome hair, or some space-tech mattress. And the frames are all at least as much.
Really, I just want something like this slat frame from Ikea with a thick pad to go on top. I feel like you should be able to buy or make this somewhere for under $50 total (not including shipping) but I don't know where to look. Any ideas?
