I was uninsured in between jobs for about 2 months. Unluckily during that time frame I had a pretty serious emergency room visit, including MRI's, blood work, etc.

About a month after I get a call from their partner collection agency, so it hasn't been sent to collections yet they are just calling to collect. He tells me that the bill is 11 grand. Basically told him he has a better chance being struck by lightning than me paying this bill. But in fairness I did go and use medical services and clearly there is a cost so I felt bad. I called the hospital directly rather than dealing with the rude collections company.

Talking to the hospital was a much different conversation and really is the reason I am posting this. If anyone else encounters this it really helped. I told her the same thing I told the collections team, " I am not paying this" but I was willing to pay something. She asked me what I thought was fair. I said I believe that 4k was fair, 48 hours later she called saying the CFO of the hospital has approved the offer.

Hopefully this helps some of you if you run into this issue. I think it is just as beneficial if you are insured and still get a crazy bill.
