How can startups solicit family and friends as investors if the minimum requirement for an accredited investor is 1 million?

I have read that a lot of startups and startup funds solicit their family and friends for seed money. However, the seed money is usually in the area of ~100k.

I thought you could only get accredited investors with net worths of 1mm or more?

Am I missing something here?
