I have prepaid service for my cellular phone and calling from outside the US, the cost/minute is 45 cents a minute. Recently, while vacationing in Europe, I found out that my debit card account had been compromised and someone charged hundreds of dollars at restaurants and stores using my debit card number. I don't know how this happened as I had just gotten a new card last month and I had the physical card in possession.
I had to make a return call to the fraud department of the bank and knowing this call may take some time, I initially called with Google Hangouts. I don't know if it is the app or hotel wifi but the sound quality was terrible throughout the call. I ended up calling back using Talkatone with crystal clear reception. I had to call the bank the following day after the fraud department put freeze on the debit card as it was Sunday to remove the charges that had already gone through and hit the account. Again, Talkatone came to the rescue and the bank was able to reverse the charges. I am not advocating any particular service over other but my point is that VOIP app, even if not used regularly, can save a lot of money and hassle if you have wifi reception but no or expensive phone service.
