I recently finished my 5th year of teaching high school math. In October of 2016, I applied for teacher loan forgiveness which I qualified to receive up to $17,500. Several months went by and I hears absolutely nothing from the loan company or the Department of Education. I started calling my loan company once a month starting in January to touch base and to keep the lines of communication open. Finally, on March 30th, 2017, I received a letter that my Teacher Loan Forgiveness had been approved. I quickly logged in and to my dismay, I only received $5000, of the $17,500 loan forgiveness that I qualified for. Don't get me wrong, $5,000 is a lot of money, but when I was expecting $17,500 I was really let down.
After a short freak out and cry in the shower, I called my loan company to determine why I did not receive the full amount of forgiveness. They told me they would look into the matter further for me. From April until June, I continued to call my loan company to determine if they had any more information on my loan status. June 14th I made my usual bimonthly call without paying much attention to my loan amount online. The customer service representative informed me that I had received a letter back in March that I had received the loan forgiveness. I explained to him that I only received $5,000 of the $17,500 and that was why I was calling. He paused, and then stated that he was seeing a $0 balance on my account. I quickly logged in and saw that I had received the full amount of loan forgiveness. I got a little hysterical on the phone and I was laughing a whole bunch. My student loans have now been reduced by about 40% and I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. If you are working on Teacher Loan Forgiveness, be persistent and be prepared to wait. It took about 8 months for me, but it was well worth the wait in the end.
