I read an article that said you could reduce your living space by 29% by sleeping in a hammock.

So about 9 months ago (early August 2016), I gave my bed to a friend, bought a hammock, and have slept in it ever since. To clarify, I've slept in beds during that time. Vacation, conferences, etc. But every night I've spent at my apartment, I've slept in a hammock.

My biggest revelation is that it's not really a simpler way of living. Unless you strap it up to the walls--something I'm not willing to do in a living space I rent--it takes up more space than a bed. The structure is like 9 feet long, and about as wide as a bed. Image one and two to demonstrate.

Plus, it requires a bunch of other stuff. I learned the hard way that it'll screw up your knees. The curvature of the hammock pushes your calves forward, which is fine for a quick nap but leaves you barely able to walk after 8 hours of sleep. The solution is a rolled-up blanket under my legs, to keep my knees bent.

Also, I'd wake up with a weird criss-cross design from the material on my face, plus a sore neck. So I added a pillow. And of course, when it got chilly I needed a blanket. So it literally required more "stuff" than a bed.

The friend who has my bed is moving soon (and not taking the bed with him), so I'll be switching back in a month or so. It's been a nice experiment. But for those of you wanting to simplify your life with a hammock, I can't recommend it.
