Edit: Thank you, everyone for the advice! We decided that we will ask the job recruiter if we could try again when our lease is up in January, when we are in a better position financially. Again, thank you for the help! :)
ORIGINAL POST: I am currently at a job I hate. I work in maintenance, but have no skills as a mechanic, and I suck at troubleshooting.
I got a job offer for a Targeting job in Tampa. It's $20/hr but $10/hr less than what I'm making now. Did a budget as well as I could, by moving, we lose $885/month. This doesn't include the $1000 to break lease and the $1400 for a uhaul truck.
I'll be on 5 days 8 hours per day or 4 days and 10 hours a day, instead of my 12 hours for 3 days and 6 hours for one day.
We are pretty much hung up on the money aspect because husband wants a kid and if I took the job, we couldn't afford it.
I've used cost of living calculators that say that with my currently salary ($60,000), I could afford a job in Tampa ($43,000). But I still lose the extra $885/month for savings and fun money.
When is a likable job worth a $20,000 pay cut a year?
Edit for more info:
Current benefits: My medical, dental, vision are paid completely, I also get short term and long term insurance for 60% of paychecks It's $530 to add husband, then another $200 for kids ($830/month total) 401k is half match, so if I put 6% in, they put 3% in
New job: I pay $180/ month for medical, they pay for dental, vision and life insurance It's $328 to add husband, but I blanked on asking about kids No 401k matching
Currently, I work 3.5 days for 12 hours the 3 full days and 6 hours on the half day. Every 60 days, we work 8 days straight, but every opposite 60 days, we get a 6 day break to switch from day to night shift.
I'm 28, husband is 31. He's not working because we are in the midst of bankruptcy (I filed way before this job came up,) and the lawyer said we were too close to failing the means test for him to work. As soon as bankruptcy is done, he is getting a job.
Current Expenses: Rent-$1100 Utilities- $50 Phones -$170 My car - $265 My car insurance - $152 Sallie Mae - $105 Grandma - $100 Mum - $100 Gas - $150 Food - $300 Laundry - $60 (laundry card) Cat food and litter - $80 His car and insurance (we pay his dad) - $200 Internet -$50 Sony Vue - $40
Kids- So, we know kids are expensive. Just diapers, formula, etc alone is what's daunting. We worry that we won't be able to provide for the kid well enough during those formulative years. And if we do have kids, husband will be the one to stay home (that's our agreement before getting married)
