I'm a trail runner and in my area there are lots of races through the year. If you volunteer at one you often get a 50-100% discount on a future event as a thanks. I just saved about $40 registering for a race. Plus volunteers usually also get some swag and free food. If you're hard up but still want to do fun things consider volunteering. You also meet people and get involved in a community!
