I am looking for a good pair of work boots, to use at mine sites. I am currently an intern at an underground limestone mine, and the only requirement for boots is that they are protective toe, and they obviously must meet MSHA standards, which are not particularly stringent. I work 72-78 hours a week, so they absolutely must be durable and have a long life-span. Martin Marietta provides all employees with a Boot Allowance of $150. I don't know where I will be working in a year, and I know some mines require composite toe, puncture, metatarsal and/or electrical hazard protection. I would like to get a pair of boots that will meet all of these possible requirements just to cover all my bases, though it is not strictly necessary. I am willing to spend up to $250 of my own money. The mine I currently work at also tends to flood on the surface, up to, and sometimes over the upper calf, and would also like a pair that are waterproof up to the calf. These also must be protective toe, though the other requirements are not as important to me on this pair, as it is much less common in boots like these. I visited a Red Wing store, and liked the feel of the boots, but have serious concerns about life span and durability. A co-worker complained of his $300 Red Wings breaking down after less than a year, and he drives an underground haul truck most of the day, so his boots do not get used/abused very much. Any help, suggestions, or advice would be much appreciated, thanks.
