In this case, I am thinking large appliances where it would be impractical to have a spare (air conditioners, water heaters, car), but life would really suck if they suddenly went inoperative.
So, to truly get every single cent out of something, one would typically want to run it until it is beyond economic repair, right? With that in mind, I often wonder as I look at ads for major appliances, "Who in the world replaces these because they feel like it?" At the same time, when the appliance does fail, one might not necessarily have the time to shop around to get a good deal.
So, r/Frugal, when do you say, "Time to shop around for ____ before the one I have really breaks!"
