2016 marked the first year my wife worked on a 1099 so we made quarterly estimated tax payments as required. I thought we were free and clear after filing taxes in April but just now got a letter from the IRS about a missed quarterly tax payment and that we now owe just about what I had them estimated at. Befuddled I looked up my documents and sure enough discovered I had submitted the Jan 15th tax payment for 2017.

My gut tells me to just pay the due amount and apply the Jan 15th payment I made towards the June 15th amount (since I paid the full estimated tax amount on April 15th). Anything off in my thinking here? I'm pretty sure the IRS won't correct my mistake since, after all, selecting the incorrect year was my mistake. :-)
