I'm not sure if this is the best subreddit to ask this question but thought I might as well give it a shot.

My very first car, and the card that I've driven for the past 4 years, a Mazda3 hatchback is finally nearing the end of it's life. It currently has over 175K miles on it and it's starting to rust out pretty bad to where I'm not sure it's going to pass inspection. Therefore, I think it's time I start looking for a replacement.

I could use some advice on finding the best, most affordable hatchbacks around the 6K to 7K range. I wouldn't mind sticking with the Mazda3 by simply upgrading to a newer model (2008ish) but I also wouldn't mind trying another car as well. I've listed some the criterion that I'm looking for below.

MUST HAVE: Automatic Transmission Under the 7K range Have decent MPG and be a brand that's affordable/easy to fix

WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE Something that can handle snow well (live in Norther Va so snow can be an issue) Something with decent cargo space and seat room MP3 Capable Something that has just enough power to make fun to drive

Any advice would be appreciated!
