I moved from Canada to the US a few years ago, I recently got health insurance after being employed again, so I went to the doctor to tell him about my sleep problems. He referred me to a sleep specialist doctor who set me up with a sleep study. I made sure to ask the doctor if it would be covered by insurance and he said that he would check with them before setting it up. A couple days later I get the call and it's setup. So I figure that it's covered and get the sleep study done. I recently checking myuhc.con (United health care) online, and it shows that "I may owe" ~$1500 of the $4500 that was billed for the study and $150 of the $450 that was billed for the visit.
My insurance plan works something like this, I have a $1500 deductible with a $5000 out of pocket maximum. The deductible has pretty much been completely used from other visits to be primary care.
I'm usually proactive with these types of things but I made a huge mistake by taking the doctors word of it 'being covered' is there anything I can do? I'm a student currently doing an internship making about $22/hour my wife is in school.
