For example, Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian markets---sell buckwheat (kasha) for as little as $1/lb when one can expect to pay several times that amount at a typical American supermarket. It's because the people who shop at those places use buckwheat as their staple filler, whereas the American supermarket has rice as it's staple filler and buckwheat is a novelty there.
Can someone shed some light on which ethnic markets to find deals on different foods and food groups, and maybe how much one could expect to pay for it there? Or if the answer for a particular food is Costco or a local farmer's market? My own personal list of foods includes
- Eggs
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Gorgonzola cheese
- Grated pecorino romano cheese
- Tabasco sauce
- Kale
- Onions
- Carrots
- Walnuts
- Almonds
- Dried cranberries
- Parmesan peppercorn dressing
- Chick peas
- Pinto beans
- Salmon
- Apples
- Clementines
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Pomegranates
