I've been interviewing for a product management role at a startup/e-commerce company in a large city (not the bay area or nyc). During my first interview, I was nervous that I wouldn't make round 2 because of having less than 1 year of experience. So when pushed for a pay range I said 50-65k. The HR official said "OK we have something in that range." I feel like my suggestion was 1) super broad and 2) set me up just for 50k.
During the last three rounds of interviews, it seems I've really proven that I have the experience I need despite just one year. I feel pretty confident with my performance. They've pushed me through the process extremely fast and I'm expecting an offer soon.
How can I negotiate up when I already said 50k is a minimum I'd consider? Currently, I actually only make 43k (haven't told them that!). However, product managers usually make 60k+ where I am. I moved into the role originally for the title since I was only making 37k in a support role at the company before. I'd love to see myself making 60k+ now.
Do I simply explain that during the first round I was nervous about my years of experience and feel that I set a lower minimum than I wish I had? And that I feel with all the experience and skills I've demonstrated I'd like to see something close to 65k?
I negotiated hard at my current company and went from 30k-37k originally. I did it wonderfully that time. But I feel like I boxed myself in too early with this company.
Thanks for any advice!
