Hi, this is my first ever reddit post (after years of using reddit!). I am 29 years old and have spent the majority of my adult life squandering money on "shiny" things. Basically I have been living life like a child for the past 10 years. Any money I could get my hands on would almost immediately be spent as if the money tree would never go barren. Now, I should also state, I developed a pretty nasty drinking problem in my early 20's and was in denial about it for years. I was not living in reality. I finally came to grips with it a while back. However, here I am, approaching 30 with no savings and trying to figure out what to do with my life! So now that my background is out of the way.... I want to form a healthy relationship with goals and the money needed to achieve them. I want to break the habit of loosely spending every dollar I make. It is not (and never has been) fulfilling. Here are the numbers: After tax I bring home about $1,800 a month. I pay child support, but have it taken out of my check so I never see it. Rent: $400 Phone: $50 Gym: $15 Spotify: $10 Grocery: $250 These are my only expenses guys! I recently moved from the city to a more rural area, so I am in need of a cheap car to get around. Basically I am trying to grow up! Trying to make smarter decisions after years of personal neglect. I would love some feedback and advice on where to start and how to become more disciplined. I do not want to be 35 or 40 facing the same bleak financial future. I realize I am still young and want to seize the opportunity while I can! Thank you all so much!
