Hello PF! I hope I'm in the right sub for this topic, if not please feel free to lead me in the right direction.
I have been a regular patron at a bar near my job for the last two months. Recently, I met an elderly man who told me he made collectible doll houses as a hobby. He said he has about 15 of them sitting in his house and he has no way to get rid of them, but he asked me to sell them for him.
They run from $295 to $995. He emphasized to me that they are NOT toys, they are for decoration/collectibles. He offered me 15% commission on each one I can sell online. So far, he's given me developed photos of the doll houses, the corresponding names and the prices.
So here is the kicker:
this man is basically computer illiterate. He doesn't use email or PayPal. He doesn't even own a computer. The photos he gave me are not even digital so I have to scan them and upload them onto some kind of hard drive.
He doesn't want me to come and see them myself to take my own photos, so I can only use the photos he's given me. We have to meet at the same bar to go over the same things every time. I've repeatedly asked him to give me a list of materials he's used, dimensions, etc because this is all important information for potential eBay listings.
He is quite stubborn and difficult to work with and doesn't seem to understand how this all works. Given eBay takes a cut of every sale, and he is only giving me 15% commission, I am wondering Reddit if this seems like too low of commission or too difficult of a scenario. I'm thinking, if he only sells half of the doll houses, I may only make about $400, or possibly even less. I don't even know what the market is for collectible doll houses.
I am considering pulling out because I don't want to stress myself out trying to work with him. On the other hand, I feel bad that he doesn't know how to get rid of all of these gorgeous collectible doll houses and I DO feel like I could help, not to mention the extra cash which could be nice.
Also some things are really off-putting about him. He says he wants my SSN and personal information about me and he is also very prejudice/offensive/ a bigot. Like today, when he gave me the walgreens photos, I was sitting with my friend who is a drag queen and the old man was very rude and even went as far as to sit almost 10 seats away from me.
should I pursue this opportunity?
ETA: Just wanted to add that he did say he would take care of the shipping aspect, though I'm unsure if shipping is the best route for such expensive and fragile dollhouses.
TL;DR A computer illiterate elderly man wants me to sell his handmade/hand painted collectible doll houses online for 15% commission but he is difficult to work with and I'm not sure if the possible earnings are worth my time.
