I live in a large old (pre-1915) colonial style house with no insulation or central heating. It's a rental, and the fireplaces have been blocked off. There are gas heaters but the landlord has disconnected them. There's also a panel heater in the kitchen but it just seems to use electricity without heating much. It's fall here(southern hemisphere), and it is already 41 degrees f in the house in the mornings. The top temperature at the height of the day is 59 degrees f inside. It is actually legitimately warmer outside than inside. We're bundling up -brushed leggings under trackpants/jeans, several layers of wool under polarfleece, double layers of socks then slippers, but it's still so cold my hands and feet go white and numb.

We have an oil heater to heat the lounge but we're afraid to use it too much because the landlord says (verbally -not in rental contract) that if we use heaters we'll have to pay more (utilities are included in rent). Even when we do use the oil heater, the room warms up but then cools back down very quickly.

Since it's only fall it's going to get a lot colder, and we're not sure we can do a winter in these conditions. Any hints for keeping the place warmer? Already know the bubble wrap trick, and have used it in a smaller apartment in the past, but there's so many huge windows in this house that would be costly and impractical.
