I'm redoing my bathroom, and one of the things we're replacing is the old medicine cabinet. We've replaced it with this one here, but when it came time to put it on the wall, I realized (using a stud finder) that the place we wanted to put it doesn't line up with the studs at all. The previous cabinet was anchored in studs, but it was considerably wider than the one we have now (and the screws on one side of it were at a really wacky angle in order to get it into the stud, which made it incredibly awkward to remove) and so the one we have now can't be anchored the same way. (At best, we could have one side of it anchored, and even then it would have to be about six inches off-center from the sink below). The cabinet we're installing weighs just shy of 40 pounds, and is made to be held up by two screws. (That's 40 pounds, plus whatever we plan on putting in the cabinet.) Is that too much weight to hang on drywall without anchoring it in a stud? What is the limit? If we still want to hang the cabinet there, what are some things we can do to make it more secure without putting it somewhere else? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2pyyzz1
