I have a new apartment and new roommate and yesterday he announced in front of several other people that we would have "communal groceries". I explained to him that I have $150 for groceries a month and he said with more cash, we could "leverage our buying power". But I feel like we would also be leveraging our eating power.

How do you pay for and divide food in your household and what is the relationship between you and the people in your household? I don't think I will save money by splitting groceries with him, especially since he's gone a lot and I go shopping more than he does. I want to know what other people do, and does it save money? What's your total grocery budget?
