I am a full-time, salaried, at-will employee at a small company in Westchester NY. Due to financial hardship, my company has resorted to cutting everyone's salary by 50%.
First of all, can they do this? The company notifies us of our yearly salary at the beginning of the year and has us sign a confirmation letter "Under section 195.1 of the NY State Labor Law". Can they essentially change that salary when ever they want?
Also, what are our options for unemployment? With the cut, many are making just barely over minimum wage, and since they didn't fire or lay us off, we can't claim to be unemployed. If we quit we can't collect unemployment, and if we act out or stop doing our jobs, we can be fired with cause and then our unemployment can be revoked.
Any help would be appreciated.
