Hi PF! I'm a 20 year old college student and I've worked retail for three years now. I work in the meat department of my local store and we recently hired a new guy to take over for my responsibilities while I "move up" to do new things. While I'm training the new guy to do my job the discussion of pay comes up. I was making $8.50 an hour while the guy I was training was making $9.00 an hour.
I brought up my pay to my boss, he didn't even know how little I was making! Our company doesn't let our managers know how much we make that way they dont make the people who make less money work more hours to protect their bottom line.
When my boss heard I only made $8.50 an hour he immediately went to our store director and had my pay changed to $11.00 an hour!
Thank you PF! Your stories of asking for better pay encouraged me to take that step, which I was too nervous to do before!
(Sorry for the format, I'm on mobile posting this on my break.)
