Does a company's performance directly affect a stock's price in anyway, or have investors essentially mutually agreed upon basing their trades on this metric?

Like if a company has a bad earnings report, does that directly affect the stock's price in any way? Or is it literally just investors collectively thinking "oh shit, every one is going to sell, so I have to too" and then the laws of supply and demand take effect?
