Do you use a desktop or laptop, and do you view this as a simple living decision (in terms of physical space)?

I've always used a desktop as my primary machine, but I'm doing an internship now in a different city this summer, and living in a small studio apartment, so I just brought my laptop with me. This has made me rethink some things long term, whether I should continue using a desktop. Every time I move, I end up getting rid of tons of crap, and this move is no different. I literally packed my car in 2 hours and hit the road. Having my computer take up so little space and feeling comfortable at a pretty small desk is actually pretty cool.

I was actually going to bring my desktop (didn't realize there wouldn't be room for it anyway here), but at the last second I thought "man, transporting the computer/monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers is going to be such a pain in the ass."

The desktop, along with keyboard, mouse/mousepad, 5.1 speakers, all that, takes up quite a bit of space. I don't do any gaming, basically use it for email/internet-browsing/movies/music/programming. I do sometimes find programming on a laptop keyboard kind of annoying, but not too bad. Hopefully most of my programming will be at work moving forward though, not "for fun." (Though I have a wireless keyboard I could use which would only take up a little extra space.) Laptop speakers aren't great either, but it can be connected to some nice external speakers wirelessly. Plus I've always gotten a really huge desk (like 6' long, probably 2.5-3' deep) because my desktop setup takes so much space.

This is all more or less long term thoughts for when I finish school and get a real apartment. If I wanted to sell my desktop, can you get a decent amount for it if you remove the hard drives? (Sorry, I don't believe people won't try to find my data -- I once took an old PC to a recycling place that gives you a small amount of money, and they were quite disappointed and greatly reduced the amount they gave me when they found out I removed the hard drives.)

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? I wonder if getting rid of the desktop would get me to live more simply too in terms of less computer usage.
