I have a lot of spare time, and I was thinking about taking a 2 year course for Certified Financial Planner certification. This would be at my alma mater - which is a very good University at which I already have an MS in Computer Science.
I already have a very good career as a software architect - learning about personal finance and investing is a big interest of mine. I actually make much more than an entry level CFP, so I wouldn't be looking to get into CFP full time. But I am thinking it might be cool to pursue this certification because
-
I have a financial advisor to manage my own finances - but I've always been a 'learn it yourself, do it yourself' type guy. If I was a CFP, I'd be able to make the best choices with my own finances - and I'd be confident that I am making the best decisions. I'd be in a position to optimize my financial moves for maximum growth without having to rely on anyone else's advice.
-
The CFP cert would help me land different type of IT engineering jobs in the future, particularly in the financial sector, which tends to pay more.
-
I'd be able to start a part time private CFP practice if I wanted to.
-
I might get an MBA in the future, CFP is relevant towards that goal.
I was wondering people's opinions of this? Keeping in mind that I want to stay in the IT field, but am very interested in personal finance and investing in my spare time. I feel like I'm very interested in the subject matter, but it may be overkill in terms of what I want to get out of it - which is mainly, to be able to make the best financial decisions myself.
Thanks for any advice.
