I have a lot of spare time, and I was thinking about taking a 2 year course for Certified Financial Planner certification. This would be at my alma mater - which is a very good University at which I already have an MS in Computer Science.

I already have a very good career as a software architect - learning about personal finance and investing is a big interest of mine. I actually make much more than an entry level CFP, so I wouldn't be looking to get into CFP full time. But I am thinking it might be cool to pursue this certification because

  1. I have a financial advisor to manage my own finances - but I've always been a 'learn it yourself, do it yourself' type guy. If I was a CFP, I'd be able to make the best choices with my own finances - and I'd be confident that I am making the best decisions. I'd be in a position to optimize my financial moves for maximum growth without having to rely on anyone else's advice.

  2. The CFP cert would help me land different type of IT engineering jobs in the future, particularly in the financial sector, which tends to pay more.

  3. I'd be able to start a part time private CFP practice if I wanted to.

  4. I might get an MBA in the future, CFP is relevant towards that goal.

I was wondering people's opinions of this? Keeping in mind that I want to stay in the IT field, but am very interested in personal finance and investing in my spare time. I feel like I'm very interested in the subject matter, but it may be overkill in terms of what I want to get out of it - which is mainly, to be able to make the best financial decisions myself.

Thanks for any advice.
