We have a large house, 2 kitchens, but kitchen we use has apartment size fridge (we rent out part of house). Regardless, even if you buy a large fancy fridge, the freezer compartments are small.
We decided to get a chest freezer. Luckily, our local Best Buy had a 5 CF freezer for $99 (Insignia - on sale). Sits next to fridge now. We transported it in our little Ford Fiesta!
So things to dislike about fridge w/ freezer:
1) Icemaker takes up a lot of room
2) It's small already
3) Food can slip out when you try to pack stuff in
4) Can't do bulk Costco shopping 5) Don't really need an icemaker. They can fail and also you can have water line issues. A bag of ice or ice cube trays does the same thing.
6) You always have to lean over since usually the freezer is on top. A bottom freezer fridge costs a lot more.
Now we can bulk Costco shop. A box of chimichangas, a box of burritos, 10 pounds of chicken breast, you name it. It's awesome.
If our fridge gives up the ghost, we will be a freezerless fridge. New freezerless fridges can also be dual use. You can use a fridge or freezer. Not all, but some.
It's a better deal to split up freezer and fridge. You have more room and its cheaper.
