So Let me start by saying I pretty much know that there is likely no solution outside of me paying what the agency is asking me. However, if there is another solution and I found out way too late, I would feel silly for not ever asking.

Basically, I was a part time student at my local community college for two years. I took one to three classes a semester during that time, and each year it was paid for through FAFSA. I believe it was the Pell grant that I was receiving. Well three semesters ago my Grandpa became sick the day before classes started. I had already enrolled for my classes that semester. I dropped everything I had going on to be at the hospital, and then traveled to another city when he had to be transported. Due to all of this, I was not able to attend any my classes that first week, and was dropped from the courses I was supposed to be in. Fast forward to now and I owe my college 1,600 for the classes I had enrolled in. They have turned me over to a collection agency.

Do I have any options outside of paying the money being requested? I know the charge is because I had already enrolled, but it just feels so unfair considering I never made it to class and was supposed to have the FAFSA aid (which I assume was rescinded after being dropped from my courses, although I never received any email or letter informing of this.) I also did not call the school to explain why I missed my classes, and looking back it was a dumb mistake, but it was an emotional time for me. Any help is very much appreciated!
