I'm looking to finally (reluctantly) get my first credit card (or two or three), and I'm trying to figure out which one(s) would be best for me, given my particular situation and consumption and lifestyle habits.

  • I would like to build credit as quickly as possible without carrying a balance/ paying interest

  • I'd prefer a no fee card unless there's some odd perk/ rewards package offered by a card with an annual fee that would make it worth it.

  • I will be putting a down payment on my first home within the next month or so.

  • I very rarely travel (and I will travel even less now that I'll be tied to a house/ mortgage. So maybe one trip every 3-4 years, if that)

  • I never eat out at restaurants

  • I never go out to movies/ theaters (watch everything online)

  • I don't own a car (no gas payments)

  • My monthly food/ grocery expenses are fairly minimal, maybe $70-$100 max ( I tend to buy a lot of things off the reduced shelves at stores like No Frills and Freshco and related. I don't shop at Loblaws much at all, and the area I'm likely moving to doesn't seem to have a Loblaws or a No Frills, anyway, so I don't think a PC credit card for the cash back perks would be of any help in that regard)

  • I buy almost nothing new for myself other than the odd tool/ hardware store item every now and again. Other than that, and other than my food costs, about 95-98% of my purchases come from buying used items (from Kijiji/ thrift stores, etc)

What can a person like me hope to accomplish and benefit from with a credit card beyond slowly establishing credit?
