I'm selling an expensive piece of musical equipment on Craigslist (US). Specifically, a vintage microphone. It is worth about $8000.
I've never sold something anywhere close to this expensive on Craigslist before. Normally for Craigslist sales, I meet the buyer in a public location, the buyer briefly inspects the item, and then the buyer hands me the payment in cash.
Given the size of the transaction, what is the best way to go about this?
I'm looking for a solution that placates both my concerns and the buyer's concerns.
The problem is that, from my POV, I prefer payment in cash. A check can bounce or even be pulled by the sender's bank in certain circumstances. I don't really feel comfortable accepting payment via PayPal either; there will be no tracking number or anything and PayPal is notorious for siding with buyers. I'm not sure if it would be unreasonable to ask the buyer to carry and hand me 80 $100 bills.
Anyone done this before?
