Hello PF I am a 40 year old that came from a family with nothing, and have fought my way up to where I am now. I do not have a credit card, no 401K because I wasn't being paid enough to participate.
My family growing up didn't have really anything: mom worked small jobs (eye and vet clinics) and my father is a millwright (PGH Steelworker brand). They lost 2 houses while we grew up and we still made it work. I went to the military because they couldn't afford college for me (last in the fam) and I have been struggling to break out of the poverty mindset.
I now have a very lucrative career with $120+ paycheck and savings of $60+K, where $50K of that was given to me for outstanding performance (technical sales). I don't know what to do with it. I already took $5K of that and bought myself something nice (electric violin and all the fixings). I never had anything growing up and have always made do with less.
I don't know ANYTHING about finance. I have stocks now, I have money, and I have no idea what the hell I am doing. And everything I read is contradicting each other: No financial adviser, get a financial adviser, get bonds not stocks / get nothing and save.
Please help. I have reached a pivotal moment in my life that no one in my family has reached and I just want to do this right so I can be successful. What should I do?
