I received a phone call from 305-515-8977 today and it left a voice mail threatening that I had a pending IRS matter and if I didn't want legal action to be taken against me, I need to call them immediately to resolve the matter.

I knew I have no problems with the IRS, and listening to the voice mail (I uploaded a copy of the voicemail here) I knew it was already some cheap robocaller. So I called back because I was on break and bored.

They told me they were with the Internal Revenue Service, and they needed my information to pull up my case file.

me: "My name is theregoesmyeye"

Scammer: (in a thick middle eastern accent) "Thank you for that, now I please need your address"

Me: "Did you find my name?"

S: "Yes, theregoesmyeye I have your case file pulled up now I just need your address."

M: "Then can you please read to me my zip code or address from my tax return to verify it is the correct name?"

S: "No I can't do that. I need your address, city, state, and zipcode."

M: "I've already filed my taxes. I need you to verify that this is the IRS by giving me information."

S: "I need your address so I can pull up your case."

M: "You said you already had my case pulled up."

scammer hangs up

I have a few more (25) calls back and forth and he keeps hanging up on me constantly until it became a phone call of nothing but curse words and who did what to the other person's mother.

I wait a few hours and I call back. The line pops open and I hear the background. Nothing but scammers, all telling people different things. Of course, I recorded it. The "Hello?" You hear is me as I couldn't believe the line just stayed open with no one saying anything.

I am writing you this story to tell you never trust anyone who calls you for information any more than you would trust that shady guy in an alleyway. I know this should be common sense by now, but hearing in that last clip, you can clearly hear a scammer in the background telling a victim that banking details were needed.

What do I do if I get a call?

Hang up and go online to file a complaint with the U.S Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) Here: http://ift.tt/2oO3uHC

You will see they already have a red button on the top right to report these things.

And under no circumstances, never give anyone any identifying information over the phone.

EDIT: Also wanted to echo what /u/SmellsLikeSex- and /u/InstantMoisture has said: The IRS will also not call you before sending a bill in the mail. See here: http://ift.tt/1Q5mvRh

The IRS will never:

1.Call to demand immediate payment, nor will we call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill..
