Kind of an odd post, but I did some searching here and while I found a lot of information, most of it's years old and so I can't ask questions on those posts anymore. I'm in the market for a new bed because my ~11 year old bed has finally developed a definite sag in the center that no amount of flipping or rotating seems to fix, and it's starting to give me a back ache for a little while after waking.
My deal is that I'm a fatass (~300 pounds) who needs a new bed. I've already looked into bedframe options and a basic platform seems like the simplest solution - this particular model is highly rated, specifies that it's designed for land whales like me, and it's sized for queen. Full beds are also long enough to accommodate me (with a bit of overhang), but since my dog often sleeps on the bed with me, that extra six inches of width is pretty nice to have. Pricing seems to be pretty consistent, with a $10 step up or step down. King isn't really an option since I don't have the space. I'm not really set on this particular model, but it seems to be a good example of what I'm looking for and the price seems fair.
Choosing a mattress to slam on top of it is where I'm getting stymied. As I've said, I'm not at all interested in spending $800 or whatever insane amount Keetsa, Casper, etc charge for their mattresses (which is practically selling at-cost compared to the fucking absurd prices Serta, Sealy, etc will charge for a decent mattress.) Memory foam seems like the most efficient choice for my needs, although I've read that it's not something you want to get wet, so I'd need to scare up some sort of waterproof or water resistant cover for it (dog seems to love getting on the bed when she's wet from rain or a bath.) I've read that inner spring mattresses also come in compressed packaging, so I suppose they're on the table too. I suppose it's worth noting that I primarily sleep on my side.
But looking into all of the big sellers on memory foam, such as this $300 12" model from Zunis (with alleged 5-year warranty) have low reviews with people mentioning sagging and cratering after less than a year of use. This would be fine if I was buying one of the cheap $100-$150 6" models, but $300 is enough of an investment I'd hope to get at least a few years out of before needing to seriously consider replacement. This is a similar pattern with almost all similar mattresses I've looked at. I haven't bothered to look at those $1,000+ mattresses, but I suppose it's possible even they would have people complaining about sagging after 6-12 months of use, so maybe it's nothing to be especially worried about. Shelling out the extra bucks for a 12" seems like the smartest choice, given that it means more memory foam and more base layer foam. However, the density of the foam is not mentioned anywhere, which is concerning.
Searched posts in BIFL have turned up people highly regarding latex beds (particularly Dunlop latex, whatever that is), including /u/y0urm0msname talking about a latex foam mattress by Lucid (with alleged 25-year warranty) which is a bit over budget, but still manageable. However, while this mattress also has numerous positive reviews, it does also have people with negative reviews indicating sagging after some months (as well as at least one review talking about mold being inside the bed cover, although it appears a representative from the seller contacted this person and offered a refund or replacement, so at least I'd be okay if that happened.) Then again, it also has a review stating it's going fine after two years. So I'm not sure what to think.
Finally, an option could be to just make my own damn bed by buying foam sheets and some adhesive (not sure what type of adhesive you'd want to use for this but I'm sure some Googling would solve that in a hurry.) Maybe bond a memory foam topper to it, then buy a latex mattress topper and call it good. However, this could end up being a lot more expensive than buying a pre-made mattress and I'd have no warranties to fall back on. On the other hand, I'd know for certain that the base layer is made of dense, strong foam that isn't likely to sag. I could probably skip the memory foam and just order a 3" latex topper instead (which is another $100 or so, unfortunately.) Some extra searching revealed multiple sellers of foam sheets that allow custom orders, so I could presumably just order a 60" x 80" (queen size) sheet of 4-5" high-density upholstery foam for around $100 or so.
What're opinions here? I'm leaning towards that 10" Lucid bed simply because there is that review of people being happy with it after two years of use, as well as the generally high opinion of latex beds and toppers on posts I found via searching, but I'd be pretty frustrated if my new bed started sagging after only 6-12 months of use! I could probably assemble a bed myself by custom ordering a sheet of high density upholstery foam either online or maybe from a local source, and then top it with a thick latex mattress topper. Or would I also need to purchase a memory foam topper first? If so, would a 1" latex topper work fine? As mentioned, getting a 4-5" sheet of foam, plus a 2-3" memory foam topper, and a 2" latex topper would probably come out to over $500, which is unfortunately quite a bit over budget.
