I shared a couple of days ago about how I recently changed my internet habits, I figured I might expand on what I've been doing in my less virtual life.
The Storage
Two weeks ago I woke up and decided I wanted to clean my storage and throw away stuff I didn't use anymore. This was unlike me to do because I've always been a bit of a hoarder.
My storage room is about 12 sqm (130 sqft) and it was pack to the brim. Opening it was a challenge, getting in was impossible.
Example of stuff that was in there
-
4 car tires (even though I sold my car a year ago)
-
IBM T41 laptop (broken, but it was my first laptop)
-
A box full of cables (10xVGA, 10xDVI, 100xUSB Micro/mini/B etc)
-
A box full of broken hardware which I was going to RMA, but never did and the warranty was expired.
-
2 boxes of my dad's 70's clothes which he though I would like to have.
-
Camping gear for a family of 10
-
RC car and tons of equipment, not touched for 5 years.
-
A Shake Weight, I wish I was joking.
You get the picture.
I was hesitant at first throwing anything away, I mean, I'll buy a car again, good to have tires even though they will only last half a summer, right? The memories on that old laptop are priceless and the RC car was expensive! It's good to have cables on hand and my dad could keep those clothes for 40 years, obviously, it means a lot to him.
No! This is delusional!
The tires are a hazard, the laptop is literally trash and the RC car was expensive, but it was an impulsive purchase is never going to run again in my possession. I've only used one of those cables and the rest is outdated. My dad wouldn't recognize a single t-shirt in that box.
With the same mindset, I attacked my closet.
The Closet
On average, I cycle through 7 t-shirts, 3-4 jeans, 4-6 shirts, a couple of socks and underwear.
So why do I have +50 t-shirts, 14 jeans, 10 jackets and 4 suits which don't fit?
TL: DR & The summary end how this fairy tale ended
This was a reality check long overdue.
I just donated 7 trash bag of clothes to the red cross and my storage is nearly empty, it was just trash, 12sqm of trash.
For my upcoming birthday, I've strictly asked to get no gifts, I just see it as a burden and insane waste of money and earth's resources. Everything I could possibly need, I have.
I've never felt so good and hopefully, this will help someone out there that needs a little push towards a simpler life.
Less is more.
