So I have a fair amount of $HPE stock that I've had since they split from $HPQ. If I were to sell that stock i would pay long term capital gains, since I haven't bought any in the past year.

If you follow the tech sector you'll know $HPE spun off their services and consulting division, and shareholders received a portion of the new company $DXC. If I were to sell this stock now, would I pay long or short term capital gains? Basically, is it based off the purchase date of your shares in the original company, or the date you acquired the shares of the new company?
