My step father died out of the blue last night. Pulmonary embolism.
He did all the finances and retirement accounts, etc, between him and my mother. (Old-school southern family.)
Given the financial conversations we had, he was quite well off (owned and sold a few restaurants, Navy pension, retirement from a military contractor company after, and a shrewd investor...who lived very, very simply with my mother, gardening and reading.)
He passed last night, and I came home to find out my mom has NO idea of the state or location of their finances, other than a paid-off house, 12 acres of property located elsewhere, and some commercial real estate.
But the actual accounts or life insurance or will or investment accounts...she has no idea where these are, if they exist, or where the papers for them would be.
I ordered a bunch of death certificates, because I remembered that advice from every death-related reddit thread. But that's it. How the hell do I track these down for her and get her taken care of?
(There are three kids and we all do well...so we're just worried about our mom).
Help, please! Honestly, we're all in shock, but I want to not drop the ball for her future.
How do I begin to piece together this mess?!
