about me:

-Two MA degrees (no debt)

-$20 k savings

-some $ invested in RRSP

-no kids

-no house or car

current job:

-Freelance writer and editor (can be done remotely): $8 K last year

-Teacher at a college that I love : $6 k last year

(possibility for a new course, but not guaranteed. so let's say another $6 k, best case scenario)

total yearly wage 2016 was: $14,000

Yes, I'm poor. Yes, I've been trying for 3 years to get a full time, tenure-track, teaching position. Yes I pick up odd jobs here and there, when I can. Yes I've applied to other cities. Yes, I live in Canada.

The thing that's changed: My SO has moved across the country to go back to school. He had all the money saved up and he will have minimal debt. He also has a bunch of scholarships that are paying his rent.

As a result, it will now cost me more money than I make, to stay in my current city: I will have to find my own apartment. If I live with roommates, I can still find a place that is (estimated) $700 a month.

If I move across the country with him, I can live "for free" and I would still keep my freelance job (around $8 k)

He would like me to move - but let's set aside the relationship at the moment

My parents, friends, and everyone else are encouraging me to pay the extra rent and stay. I love my teaching job. My students are fantastic, the faculty is great, my boss is awesome. I work at one of the best places in the country for my field. In every way it's my "dream job."

It also makes me feel good to have a job and get teaching experience. Because of the bad economy, my PhD friends are basically in the same position as me - finding full time work seems impossible. I am hesitant to leave the job because it's good experience / good opportunity.

BUT it means it will cost more money to stay than the money I make teaching. Even if the extra class is added (12 K) it will still cost me (estimated) $8 K in rent alone.

If I move: rent is free, and I would continue the freelance work

Is this bad financial advice to stay?
