Hey /r/PersonalFinance. Title pretty much says it all, but here are the details. My grandfather died earlier this week and being the impulsive sweetheart that my girlfriend is she immediately called in to work to spend the day with me and my family. She told them it was an "emergency" but offered no further detail. Later she wrote an email to her boss explaining what she had done and why. The next day she had a talk with her boss and was told that she was fired effective end of the week. At this point we are trying to be pragmatic like looking at new jobs, reading up on unemployment, and generally trying to move forward as quick as possible. Any advice on this difficult transitional period? We live in California by the way, if that means anything.
Edit 1: She was fired, not laid off.
