While we all need food, water, shelter etc. there are some "must-haves" and "nice to haves" which differ between people. For one person, a must-have might be close proximity to their family while for another a must-have might be a car. These types of must-haves aren't the basic needs of physical survival, but the building blocks of a lifestyle that makes them happy, or at least doesn't actively make them depressed.

Nice-to-haves are different, they aren't fundamental to one's mental health and wellbeing, they're more like icing on the cake. These might include annual trips or yoga classes. You could easily do without them, but they add enough to your life that for you, their positives justify the time and monetary expense involved.

Here is my personal list.

Must-haves: -Independence and adequate space from others, including and especially immediate family -Beauty in my surroundings. It doesn't have to be a fancy expensive neighbourhood, just somewhere with a short walk to nature or at least aesthetically pleasing buildings -Living somewhere with nice places to walk to that aren't stores/malls or fast food restaurants -At least one day per week of little to no responsibility -Access to decent public transit -Being childfree -A small and simple but classic and cohesive wardrobe that suits my style personality -Computer with internet, cell phone -Being involved in a community. For example, volunteering or attending local meditation groups. These are often free or cheap. Taking classes is a more-expensive option. -A meditation practice and constant reflection

Nice-to-haves: -Owning my own place (someday) -Trips at least every second year -Being in a committed, loving and supportive relationship, which I currently am (I can also be perfectly happy single, this isn't and shouldn't be a must-have) -Visiting my favourite coffee shop -Activities like yoga, colouring, small crafts etc. -A clean and comfortable bath tub

I'd like to hear all of yours! I'd also like to hear if you have any must-haves that are a bit unusual, or things that are not must-haves for you that are for most other people. How much do you have to work to take care of all of your must-haves, and some of your nice-to-haves?
