I live in the desert. Hot, dry, dusty, the works. Summer is peeking around the corner with a scorching gaze, and I need a new pair of pants to match. I've been relying on my trusty Dyer and Jenkins jeans for the last two years, and they're finally starting to show wear at the crotch. Time to upgrade to something lighter.

My parameters are:

  • durable. Like, a year in Afghanistan meets two-week European vacation walk-a-thon durable.

  • breathable. The low desert is not forgiving, and my testicles do not need a sauna on top of the omnipresent heat.

  • ideally dark indigo in color. I've gotten used to matching with jeans, but this isn't absolutely critical.

  • gusseted crotch and/or some degree of stretch for good range of motion

I've seen Prana's Brion pant and the Outlier Dungarees or Futureworks recommended in the past, but I don't like the noise of the full-synthetic weave on the former (I tried out a pair of Zions at one point) and I question the absurd price tag on the latter. I paid $130 for my jeans, granted, but ~$200+ seems excessive. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've taken an interest in nylon/organic blends for the balance of strength and lightness. A nylon/cotton or nylon/merino blend seems like a viable option, and I really like the climate-control properties of merino in my shirts, although I'm not sure how well they translate to pants.

In summary, I'm still looking. Are there any pants you guys have come across that hit even some of these criteria?
