It's widely accepted that whenever writing about a company, the author should disclose any investments they have in that company.
So for example, if I owned stock in Amazon and wrote about how Amazon is the future of commerce, I would need to disclose that I own shares in Amazon.
But what about ETFs/Mutual funds? These investments contain a wide assortment of stocks. Let's say a particular mutual fund I own has a large stake in Facebook.
If I were to write an article about Facebook, should I disclose my position in said mutual fund that has a large stake in Facebook? Or is it really only needed when investing directly in a company?
I want to be honest and comply with the law, but it's hard to know where to draw the line when it comes to ETFs/mutual funds. It would be pretty damn hard to know if I have stake in a company via a mutual fund when it's constantly changing it's holdings and there's hundreds of companies held in it.
