I was seriously thinking about getting a dog until I read that they can cost $42,000 over their lifetime. Pet owners, is that true? Was the financial burden noticeable?

The dog would be in NYC, which is expensive enough just for a human to live in. I assume most people use doggy day care? Or can you actually let a dog chill at home for free until you get back. I thought it would cost a little bit more to have a dog, but not a budget buster! I am saving about 20% of my income post-tax income after all expenses, including student loans.
