What the most frugal way to purchase a car? I'm totally in the dark.

Here's the story - My wife and I have a car that we bought used from the estate of her Grandmother, and it's getting old. We're probably going to need to replace it in the next 2 years, as that's when the maintenance just wont be worth it anymore. Now I totally understand that a car is one of the most expensive traps out there, but we can't get by without it. I commute by bicycle year round, but it's not an option for the wife - we need to have 1 car.

We dont have the cash to buy a used car right now (but am going to start a savings account and start socking away a little dough). But when we need to bite the bullet, what's the best way to go? I'm assuming gently used, but what a about off-lease? And financing? Got any tips on that?
