I've been doing this for a while and have no complaints
I used to, every three years, drop $1000 or so on a brand new laptop.
Now I buy a $150-$200 laptop every year and spend $50 on either more RAM or a fresh SSD if I don't reuse an old one. I slap my favorite linux distro on it and it's a new super zippy machine for the whole year.
Every year.
The benefits? I get a new machine every year and they're so cheap i never worry about it. I see people on the train freaking out with their laptop bags like there's glass in there. Nope, idc if you dent it, I'll plow through the crowd with it under my shoulder.
Also I have a bunch of spare really-useable laptops at home now so that when a friend is in need or their devices break before a project/trip I can swoop in and save the day :)
The other nice thing is that these laptops (if you're nifty at configuring linux) are practically ageless. The first one I bought still works really well. If you ever come accross financial burdens, just don't buy a new one the next year!
