For example, we are in process of filing taxes, we have 2 kids, we have a high household income-but a wide salary disparity between the 2 of us. By filing jointly we dont qualify for any child tax credit, earned income credit, personal exemptions, deduct school debt interest, etc. If filed separately and had never gotten married, one of us would qualify for all of the above. Also we both separately have hsa accounts, if we were not married one of us could put 6750 (family) annually away, the other 3450 (indiv). I'm just trying to understand why married (2 individuals that have wide salary disparity)couples are penalized? Can someone enlighten me on the benefits of marriage from a financial perspective.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to both have jobs, both earn decent living, and have a great loving relationship. We both just after meeting with the accountant joking that we could improve our financial situation if we got divorced. We couldnt come up with any monetary benefits in our situation, and hoping the reddit community could enlighten us and "save our marriage" (obviously joking).
