I go to the Citadel military college. I was torn between it and North Georgia, which was in-state and way cheaper, but I did the wrong thing and listened to my parents who said "don't worry about cost, do it for the prestige".
So, I'm now a junior who paid $40,000 per year for two years and $23,000 this year (got residency in SC), and will be paying another $23,000 next year. All with private loans. Scholarships only covered a small fraction of the cost. I went in hoping that I could contract Air Force and have a stable job with good benefits.
Today, my medical evaluation, which was taking a long time to process, came back and I was medically disqualified. I can't contract. I have done zero internships because I've been set on my Air Force job. I'm an exercise science major with a 3.0 GPA, and I don't know what to do because jobs in my field aren't exactly the best paying or easy to come by. My monthly loan payment will likely work out to over $1400 a month, and I'll still have to pay for all other living expenses. I'm honestly terrified.
I'm currently trying to land an internship in the strength and conditioning program my school offers because I love that kind of work. I'm going to contact the career center and job hunt as well as try to establish alumni connections. It's just scary because I only have a year to find a solid job before I graduate. Grad school is hardly an option, as it will only mean more debt and I don't have the GPA for it. What are my options? How do I keep myself from being swallowed by this debt?
